Where the Mega Bloks bag hands over a pile of bricks, this box hands over a scene: people, a dog, a car, a window and 1-2-3 number bricks, with a lid that stacks like one enormous brick. The difference shows up quickly. A one-year-old stacks and knocks down; a two-year-old puts the dog in the car and drives it over to inspect the tower.
We rate this the better long-term buy of the two, with money as the caveat. The bricks are the big DUPLO format, roughly twice a standard brick, and the fit and finish are the most consistent of anything on this page. It's also the set most likely to still be out in three years, because everything you add later connects to it.
Two small things. The storage box is a bit wobbly in the hand, though it swallows other DUPLO sets happily enough, and the piece count is modest next to the bulk bags here: you're paying for the extras and the badge, not the volume. Neither bothered us much. What lingers is the number bricks. A toddler who can find the 3 is a toddler who wants to build the 3, and that's a lovely thing to watch happen.
Bottom line: Pay more and you get a world instead of a pile: people, a car and number bricks that turn a brick box into stories.
